Listen to the Pink Warrior playlist

Music inspires us, moves us, transports us.

Music has the power to take us away from our surroundings. Songs can help turn a harsh and difficult situation into one of joy and pleasure.

We asked some women with breast cancer to share with you the songs that helped them through their dark days and difficult days. These are the songs that brought them hope, comfort and joy.

Perhaps these songs will help you, too.

1. ‘Tauhou’ by Aro

Talia listened to this song because “It helped me to process my emotions and grieve, but it also gave me hope, that the sun will be shining on the other side of this storm.” Other songs Talia listened to during her cancer journey were:

2. Pieces – Chase & Status
3. Nobody to love – sigma
4.‘I’m every woman’ – Chaka Khan

Faye chose this song because “It always made me want to dance and made me feel confident and strong. There isn’t any particular lyric it’s just so upbeat and lifted my mood, still does!”

5.‘Livin’ on a prayer’ – Bon Jovi

For Tash, the lyrics from Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin ’ on a prayer ’ that stood out to her were, “hold on to what we got’ we got each other and that’s a lot for love”.

She said, “I personally reached my halfway point of chemo cycle (two days before Christmas) and this song seriously held me together mentally and emotionally as I was gutted to be feeling so ill on Christmas Day but the lyrics made me feel so grateful I had made the half way point and was on the downhill slope from there.”

6.‘I’m going to love you through it’ – Martina McBride

This Martina McBride song was also important to Tash. “I remember lying in bed one night thinking I can’t do this anymore and had this song playing.”
But it made her think of a time when she would be happy and healthy with her fiancé (now husband), Keanu.

7. ‘Girl on Fire’ – Alicia Keys

For Pip, Alicia Keys has to be on the Pink Warrior playlist, in particular ‘Girl on Fire’. “It's got a strong beat so when I dragged my sorry arse, complaining, I walked to the beat and could finish my walk. All her music makes me happy and hopeful but this song was MY song. It made me feel like I owned my time, my treatment, my head, my heart.”

8. ‘Speak the name’ – Koryn Hawthorne

The song that will always hold a special place in Te Aroha Isaia’s heart is ‘Speak the name’ by Koryn Hawthorne. She says it makes her feel “like I'm not alone in this journey. I don't have to hold everything inside and bottle it up. It made me feel powerful and determined. Empowered and no longer scared.”

And Kirsty has two songs that helped her through her hard times:

9.‘I can’t go for that’ – Hall and Oats

One of the lyrics that really stood out to Kirsty is “You got my body now you want my soul don’t even think about it say no go”. Kirsty says, for her, “it was like the cancer was on my body but it wasn’t going to take my soul if that makes sense”.

10.‘Lovely Day’ – Bill Withers

An other song, ‘Lovely Day’ by Bill Withers made Kirsty feel “uplifted and made me think one step at a time. I have my family to make things lovely even when it didn’t feel that way.”
